Quick answer
Most Calgary attics are under-vented. The symptoms — ice dams in January, curling shingles by year 12, mould on the underside of the deck — all trace back to bad airflow. A proper ventilation upgrade is one of the highest-ROI things you can do for your roof.

Attic ventilation is the most misunderstood part of a roof system. The rule is simple: equal intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or vents), totalling 1 sq foot of net free area per 300 sq feet of attic floor. The vast majority of Calgary homes are under-vented, over-vented on the exhaust side only, or have intake blocked by insulation.
